The principle of biological filtration is to achieve better and quicker conversion of organic constituents by means of micro-organisms. Filter materials determine the quality of a filter!

Not the filter but the filter materials determine the quality of filtration. Mechanical filter material stops dirt but they can not decompose waste materials. Biological filter materials convert waste materials, however, they do not stop dirt. For this reason a combination usually is the thing to do. Below you find examples of such combination:

1. Cotton or filter foam, which removes large dirt particles;
2. Active pond carbon, which absorbs odours and colourings;
3. Excipient for the adherence of micro-organisms, such as ceramic filter tubules.
