Pond Care November

The period so close to winter is the time to give the pond a serious overhaul. Remove all dead plants, twigs and leaves from the pond. This will prevent pollution of the pond water.
Check the water hardness again and make sure it is within the correct values. Also provide adequate oxygen for the fish in the coming winter.

Leaves in the pond

In late November, all the leaves have fallen from the trees, and without a cover net, a lot of these leaves blow into the pond. This organic material can significantly acidify the pond environment and then cause an algae explosion in the spring. This also hinders plant growth. Therefore, this month remove the last dead leaves from the aquatic plants and prune back the marsh plants. And if you have not yet installed a cover net, it is advisable to do so. You can also install a Pond Skimmer, which is a floating surface extractor that keeps the pond clear.

Pond water testing

Before winter, test the pond water again for total GH hardness. Make sure this hardness is at least 8 °DH. Partly due to precipitation, the water becomes less hard and the risk of acidification increases. Increasing the water hardness can be done with special agents, for example GH Plus.

Using a good aeration pump during the winter months has a number of benefits for the fish:

  • Noxious gases, including CO2, can escape at the surface,
  • The water is oxygenated,
  • During a frost period, the pond remains open locally.

In winter, you may still supplement with small amounts of winter feed.
