Pond Care December

The winter months mean a dormant period for the pond. Plant growth has stopped and the fish, which are less active, hide near the bottom. Because there the water is slightly warmer than at the top. Therefore, the pond needs less attention during this period.

The filters and pumps should be left on in the winter to prevent freezing. Be sure not to pump water from the bottom or deeper area to the top due to cooling of the overall water temperature.

Counteract pond freezing

Be preventive and prevent the pond from freezing over during the winter period. The best and most beautiful method is to hang one or more air stones in the pond. The bubbling bubbles will not only keep the pond ice-free in that area, but also expel harmful gases and supply oxygen. Cutting a wak in your pond is then unnecessary. Moreover, the vibrations caused by chopping are very dangerous for pond fish. Alternatively, a pond heater will ensure that the pond is kept ice-free locally during the frost period.

Pond fish in winter

Snow on the ice could provide a nice layer of insulation but it is still advisable to remove some of the snow extremely carefully. Even though the fish are at rest, a ray of sunlight during the dark winter period does wonders for vitamin D production in fish, among other things. This keeps them more resistant and they get through the winter better.
Also, at these lower temperatures the fish have less energy needs and because they stay at the bottom of the pond, you can give them special low-energy sinking winter food. It is a myth that fish do not need food in winter.

Tip from Velda

The fish also have lower energy requirements at these lower temperatures, and since they stay at the bottom of the pond, you can give them special low-energy sinking winter food.
