Frozen pond
When it freezes, all filters and pumps should be protected from the cold as much as possible. You can leave them on to prevent freezing. In that case, be sure not to pump water from the bottom or deeper area to the top due to cooling of the overall water temperature.
If the surface is in danger of freezing, it is wise to install an air pump. This will prevent freezing and keep the water oxygenated. There is no need to cut a hole in your pond. Besides, the vibrations caused by chopping are dangerous for your pond fish.
Pond fish in winter
When the water is colder, the fish become slower. They hole up in the deepest parts of the pond and all life processes function at a lower level. You could speak of hibernation. The fish then like to be left alone. Therefore, avoid working on the pond or in the vicinity. Working near the pond causes vibrations, and water is a good conductor of sound. If the fish are still at the top of the pond, be alert, this may indicate a lack of oxygen. Install an air pump, for example, or turn on the pond pump. At this time of year be extra alert for signs of disease in your fish and intervene quickly if necessary.
At water temperatures of 5°C or more, you may supplement sparingly with a winter feed. To prevent acidification of the bottom material, you can scatter a quantity of Bio-Oxydator. This removes bottom silt and prevents new silt formation.
