Large pond

A large pond has many advantages after all, in ponds with a volume of 1,000 liters or more, the biological balance becomes very stable over time. Especially a larger depth – from 100 cm to 150 cm – is extra advantageous because the larger the pond, the more fish you can also keep. General rule of thumb is 50 cm of fish length per 1,000 liters of water. A large pond with many fish also requires a high-tech filter system with a large capacity. With a normal fish stock, you can easily keep the water of a large pond pure with many aquatic plants.

Aquatic plants in a large pond

When composing aquatic plants in a large pond, you do not have to take into account the size of the plant. Or take into account aquatic plants that grow too big also not plant species that grow too fast, or overgrow other plants. The pond plants in a large pond have room to grow.

Lesser cattail (Typha angustifolia) is suitable for a large pond. Use large pond plant baskets in which you can place the aquatic plants at the bottom. Plant these cattails along the bank to a water depth of five to 15 inches. In May, all species of cattail bloom with light brown flowers followed by deep brown, chocolate-colored seed heads: the cigars.

Water lilies are useful plants for a pond because the leaves provide shelter for fish. In summer, they keep the water from getting too warm. In addition, lilies block light so algae does not grow as fast. There are special water lilies for larger ponds with a depth of up to 120 centimeters and a water area of at least 5 square meters.

Filtration of a large pond

For a large pond you need a filter system with sufficient capacity therefore there are special filters developed for this purpose. These filters are often equipped with a thermal protection, are watertight sealed and have ceramic bearings. This gives them a long life and they can deliver the required capacity without problems. You can also connect these filters to one or more other filters to increase the capacity.
