Green pond water

Green pond water

green pond water caused by floating algae. Green pond water is caused by tiny floating algae that multiplies explosively fast. Additional effects include low KH, high pH and stagnation in the growth of oxygen plants. Green pond water is common in young ponds with nutrient-rich water.

What to do about a green pond

There are a number of measures to combat green water in your pond:

  • Provide plenty of soil substrate. It is a good place for bacteria to attach to. This then activates the microorganisms.
  • Plant more pond plants that do not rely on the water for their CO2 supply. So floating plants, water lilies and marsh plants.
  • Make sure the total hardness(GH value) of the water is at least 12° DH.

Once these measures are taken, the pond water will become clear in about 2 months. To speed up the results, a “clear water” preparation can be added and/or a filter system installed in addition to the measures mentioned. A UV-C filter also provides good service here. However, the UV lamp should be renewed annually.
