Feeding fish

Feeding fish

If you have many fish in your pond, or larger specimens, then feeding the fish is necessaryIn a pond with few fish, you hardly need to feed the fish. Small fish are very capable of gathering their own food. They eat insects and larvae that live naturally in the pond. Feeding fish is only necessary if you have many fish or larger fish in your pond. Caution! Never feed too much. Make sure the fish eat the scattered food within a few minutes. Food that is not eaten constitutes additional waste for your pond and a strain on the biological balance. The result is then algae growth and cloudy water.

Always buy good quality fish food. Healthy fish are characterized by a beautiful color pattern and stable growth. Especially for lovers of koi carp, sophisticated nutrition is important.

Feeding fish in winter

TIP! from Velda

Never overfeed. Make sure the fish eat the scattered food within a few minutes. Indeed, food that is not eaten is a food source for algae

During winter, stop feeding the fish daily when the water temperature is below 10°C. Do not start feeding the fish daily again until the water temperature is 10°C or more.

At these lower temperatures, the metabolism of (cold-blooded) fish is so low that they require almost no food. Limit the amount of food during this period. At low temperatures (10 °C or less) it is sufficient to manually give an amount of winter food once or twice a week. There is also special winter food for koi.

Fish feeders

Fish eat only small amounts at one time. In the wild they are therefore constantly looking for food. Food that is not eaten thus forms additional waste in your pond. Therefore it is better to feed your fish several times a day with small amounts. Special fish feeders have been developed to make this easy. These dispense the desired amount of food several times a day.
