Drains

Bottom Drain

A bottom drain is a type of drain connected to a pond filter. The sedimented dirt at the bottom is therefore discharged directly through the drain. When constructing the pond, the drain should already be installed at the deepest point of the pond. Especially with heavily loaded koi ponds, this is a popular method of waste removal. Soil silt is disastrous for clear water and a pathogen for your fish.

The water pressure causes the water with dirt to enter the multi-chamber filter naturally through the drain. The pump comes in dry position, after the filter, to pump the filtered water back to the pond. With a drain, the filter always remains filled with water, even if the power goes out.

Tips for using bottom drains

  • Do not connect more than 4 bottom drains to one vortex.
  • Provide a funnel effect, the bottom drain is at the deepest point.
  • Do not place the bottom drains too close to the pond wall.
