Goldfish

Goldfish, the most famous pond fish

The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) is the best-known pond fish and it feels perfectly at home in a pond. It is a color variety of the giebel (Carassius gibelio) and is an inexpensive, strong and hardy pond fish. Under the right conditions, goldfish can reach 35 cm in length. This carp-like fish was imported to Europe from China in the 17th century. In Asia, goldfish have been farmed as ornamental fish as well as consumer fish for over 4,000 years. The best known goldfish breeding forms are the Sarasa and the Comet Tail.

The goldfish is an inexpensive, strong and hardy pond fish

The common goldfish is a slow swimmer and is an omnivore. This means it eats both animal and plant foods. The larger specimens, due to their rooting in the bottom, can cause water turbidity. With goldfish, it is important to keep the population in check because goldfish reproduce quickly and easily.

As a result, after a few years there are too many fish in the pond and the pond may have problems with biological balance. Young born goldfish are black at first and change color later. In addition to orange, there are red, yellow and even white varieties.

Taking care of goldfish

Always buy goldfish in a group of at least five fish, but no more than five fish per 1,000 gallons of water.

TIP! from Velda

For goldfish, the fish pond should be at least 100 cm deep, to keep the temperature in the pond as constant as possible for the fish to overwinter. Want more tips?
