How does a biofilter work?
A pond pump pumps the water through the biofilter. This biological filter contains bacteria that convert waste products into carbonic acid. The carbonic acid is pumped back into the pond and then serves as food for the plants in the pond. This is called the biological cycle of the pond.

With new biofilters, it takes several weeks for the bacteria to multiply enough to do their job properly. Fortunately, you can add bacteria to the filter material yourself. This way you make sure your filter works faster. Also, a biofilter needs hard water. By hard water is meant water that contains sufficient minerals. You can take care of this yourself by applying a hardness enhancer. Biofilters are often suitable for ponds from 2,500 to 60,000 liters.
Purchasing a biofilter
When buying a biofilter, make sure you have a good pond pump. This is because the pump must be on continuously from March to at least October. Thus, the biofilter is supplied with water all the time. Because if the biological filter runs dry, the bacteria die and you have to start all over again.
Connecting a biofilter is not difficult. A biological filter must be placed above water and when you purchase a good filter, it always comes with a clear and useful manual.
