Covering the pond
There are a number of reasons why we cover our pond. The most common situations are:
- Preventing falling leaves in the pond.
- Easy removal of fallen leaves from the pond.
- Protecting fish from herons.
- Insulate the pond for warmer water.
- Childproofing pond and garden.
In the first two situations, you can place a cover net over the surface of the water. This barely obstructs the view of the pond and fish. By stretching a fine-mesh cover net you prevent blown-in leaves from sinking to the pond floor and disturbing the pond environment. You can then easily remove the leaves and other coarse debris.
A cover net can also come in handy in the third situation because a heron cannot fish through a cover net. This automatically protects the fish. Cover nets are available in various sizes so that there is a suitable net for every pond.
An alternative to falling leaves, for example, is a skimmer.
