Submersible pump; not an ordinary pond pump
A submersible pump is used to pump away water. As the name suggests, they are submerged under water to get a room completely dry again. This comes in handy not only for ponds, but also for flooding or when you want to drain your pond or pool.
How does a submersible pump work?
The pump is placed underwater on the bottom. Because the pump is on the bottom, it can pump water from the bottom to the top. Pumping water to within a few millimeters of the ground is called a flat-priming submersible pump.
Purchasing a submersible pump
When buying a pump pay attention to whether it is suitable for clean water only or also for dirty water. Clean water is found, for example, when you want to empty a basement, but dirty water is sandy murky water. Also, always check if there is a float with the pump. Because the water temperature of the water to be pumped out provides cooling for the motor, overheating in prolonged (dry) use is a major risk. A float ensures that the pump automatically stops as soon as the water level drops too far.
Connecting a submersible pump is not difficult. When you buy a quality pump, it always comes with a clear and useful manual.
What else to consider:
- Is there enough room for the pump.
- Is there any way to connect the pump.
- Where should the water come from and be taken to.

While submersible pumps are suitable for draining your pond, they are not suitable for providing regular water circulation
Submersible pump as a pond pump
While a submersible pump is great for draining your pond, it is NOT suitable for providing regular water circulation. For your pond, choose a durable pond pump. These can last for years and are suitable for many pond situations.
