Ornamental pond
The ornamental pond is a pond in which plants play the main role and also attract the most attention next to the fish. Ornamental water plants, beautiful fish and crystal clear water add an extra dimension to your garden. Every day you can enjoy beautiful flowering bank plants and water lilies or when you feed the fish.
The main thing is a good relationship between plants, animals and water. Preferably choose low-polluting fish, such as goldfin and gold rudd. These are two highly visible fish species that are perfect for garden ponds and require little care.
Technical installations such as pumps, filters and UV-C Units will often be useful. With the help of a filter system, you will obtain crystal clear pond water and a healthy environment for fish and aquatic plants in no time.
Ornamental pond construction
The deepest point of an ornamental pond is between 80 cm and 100 cm. This is more than sufficient for an average-sized pond. If half of the water surface is covered with light-reducing plants (water lilies, floating plants, etc.), this promotes the proper balance of the pond water. This also provides an attractive and captivating appearance. The partially clear water surface, in turn, provides tranquility and spatial effect. The sun warms the upper water layers, creating an ideal habitat, suitable for small aquatic life and water lilies. Of course, a waterfall with rippling water is also a possibility.
Ornamental pond maintenance
TIP! from Velda
When you use a UV lamp in your ornamental pond, replace it in the spring so that you can get the most out of it throughout the season
When an ornamental pond is well balanced it should require little maintenance other than plant pruning and maintaining GH and KH levels. Nature does its work. This is not always easy to accomplish. You can then use a filter system to keep the water clear, in addition to pond plants. This filter, like all filters, requires maintenance. This means that a filter must be cleaned. By cleaning, we mean removing coarse debris, excrement and other dirt particles.
When using a UV lamp, spring is the best time to replace the UV lamp. Often the bulbs still emit light, but the operation of the bulb is mostly gone after a year. By replacing the lamp in the spring, the lamp is at its most powerful during pond season.
