Small pond
If you want to create a water feature in a small garden, on the patio or even on the balcony, then a small pond is a good idea. Any pond, even a small one, is soothing and beautiful to look at. No matter how small the pond is, it is wise to do fill part of the pond with gravel and pond substrate. By doing so, you create housing for beneficial bacteria.
Aquatic plants in a small pond
When composing aquatic plants in your small pond, do not choose plants that grow too large, that grow too fast or a plant species that overgrow others. The choice of aquatic plants is therefore less than for a large pond. In a small pond you can plant water lettuce or chickweed well. But also pond plants that grow mainly in height such as the Japanese cave pipe.
For a pond with a depth of less than 25 cm, you can only use small perennial marsh plants or floating plants. At a depth of about 40-50 cm you can add oxygen plants at the bottom, which greatly benefits water quality. This will significantly prevent algae growth in your pond. If you plan to keep fish in your pond, oxygen plants are indispensable. By the way, a large pond is easier to keep clear and algae-free than a small pond. The more water the easier balance is created.
Fishing in a small pond
Keeping fish in a small pond is possible but there are a few points to consider:
- If the pond freezes in winter, the fish will not be able to survive. For this, the pond must be at least 70 cm deep. Pond heating is a possible solution.
- There can also be a lack of oxygen for the fish in summer due to the rapidly rising water temperature. An air pump will then need to be installed in the pond
- Also, fish in a small pond are easy prey for cats and birds. There are several protective solutions for this
- Add water to the pond regularly because, especially in summer, water can evaporate quickly.
Suitable fish for a small pond are the smaller fish species such as gold zippers and goldfish.
Filtration of a small pond
A special filter has been developed for small ponds. The filter floats almost invisibly on the water surface, with the filtered water flowing over the top of the filter. The filtration process is effective thanks to the special filter foam and a waterproof UV-C Unit. The filter is equipped with a powerful pond pump. This ensures not only a clear pond, but also oxygen-rich water. For such a filter, the pond must be at least 35 cm deep.
