Koi pox

Koi pox

Koi pox or koi carp pox is caused by a virus present in the pond. It can be recognized by gray cloudy skin spots that look like kerosene drops on the koi. Further spread can be recognized by wart-like and irregular skin tumors that are grayish-white. In adult fish, these conditions will usually diminish and even disappear. The condition usually develops after a period of cold, for example just after the winter period in early spring. The resistance of the fish is lower then and diseases can easily develop. When temperatures rise again, the skin spots disappear on their own.

Koi carp pox treatment

Nothing can be done about the virus itself. The fish usually heal on their own, especially when the weather warms up. However, you can increase the koi’s resistance by giving them an extra vitamin and mineral treatment in the spring. It is important to feed throughout the year with a good quality food with sufficient minerals and vitamins so that the fish can build up a good resistance.
