Pond filter material
Each pond filter consists of different filter material. The quality of this determines whether the filtering is done properly and thus how clear your pond becomes. The right combination of filter materials in your filter is therefore essential for a healthy pond!
Filter materials for your pond
There are many types of filter material suitable for purifying pond water. Nevertheless, a good filter system and the filter material used must meet two conditions:
- The visible dirt should be sifted out of the water.
- The invisible dirt and organic wastes must be converted into non-hazardous substances.
Therefore, filter materials are divided into two types. Mechanical filtration and biological filtration. In mechanical filtration, the filter holds back the dirt and in biological filtration, the dirt is broken down by bacteria.
Mechanical or biological filtration
A good filter consists of several filter phases and different types of filter material. The first phase of your filter always includes mechanical filtration. Visible dirt is sieved out of the water. The biological filtration always takes place in the second phase. Here the invisible dirt is broken down and converted to harmless or useful substances. In the final stage, you can also use biological filtration but you can also use the so-called chemical filtration. This ensures that the finest dirt particles and odors and dyes are absorbed.
Purchasing filter materials
So you need different types of material for each stage. Filter foam and filter wads are ideal for mechanical filtration. The strong nylon fibers remove coarse dirt from the pond water. For biological filtration, it is very convenient to use filter lava. This is perfect for bacterial breakdown of invisible dirt and pollutants. Active filter carbon and zeolite absorb the finest dirt particles, including odors and dyes. This is also called chemical filtration and should always be used in the final stage of the filter.
