Pond baskets

Pond baskets

When you buy pond plants in a garden center, for example, they need to go into the pond as soon as possible. To do this, place these pond plants in special pond baskets. You can usually buy these right away with the aquatic plants. Also buy pond clay so that you can get started right away. Do not use garden soil, as it is too rich in nutrients and will therefore cause algae growth.

Line the inside of coarse-mesh plastic plant baskets with cloth to prevent soil from leaching out. After filling with pond soil and placing the plant, fold the insert cloth and cover it with gravel. You can also choose flexible plant baskets made of woven material. Remember, plant roots need quite a bit of space so don’t take the pond baskets too small. Using pond baskets

Once in the pond basket, you can position and move the plants with basket until they are at the right place and depth in the pond. When it gets colder, simply move the oxygen plants to deeper and thus warmer water to overwinter. The hardy species can stay in place, but tropical water lilies, for example, must remain absolutely frost-free; preferably outside the pond. Bring tropical plants inside during the winter, keep them moist and put them in a bright spot. A pond basket is indispensable here.

Controlled growth with a pond basket

Some types of pond plants can proliferate enormously in the pond if they are not in a suitable but much too large pond basket. It works the other way around, too. A suitable pond basket inhibits the growth of the pond plant. The size of the basket determines the size of the plant.

Want more pond plants? Most pond plants can be propagated by dividing or tearing. To do this, remove the pond basket from the pond, rinse the soil from the roots, divide the plant and plant the parts in baskets with fresh pond soil. This way you can also easily swap and share plants with other pond owners. For more information, follow our blog page and have questions? Then ask them via Facebook.

Always remember: the size of the pond basket ultimately determines the size of the pond plant as well
