About ponds and pond construction
There is much to tell about ponds. From the first thoughts of building a pond in your garden to maintaining a large koi pond with a whole host of precious fish. It’s all about ponds. First, let’s consider the different types and shapes of ponds.
Types and shapes of ponds
Ponds come in many shapes and sizes. And each with unique characteristics. And before you build a pond, it’s important to choose among the different types of ponds. Do you want a shallow mirror pond or just a real fish pond? There are different types of ponds to choose from.
And once you know what kind of pond you want, what shape do you choose? The shape of the pond often depends on the space available in your garden and the environment in which the pond will be placed. For most ponds, the shape is not important either, as long as there is some flow possible. Will you go for round? For square? There are several shapes to choose from.
Pond Plants
Most ponds also have pond plants. Except koi ponds. Plants and koi don’t mix very well. Pond plants are very important for a healthy pond. Well-growing plants absorb nutrients from the water and release oxygen. This is how they keep the pond healthy and clear. The stronger a pond plant grows, the more nutrients it absorbs from the pond. And for the biological functioning of the pond, that’s what matters.
Pond Fish
Do you also want fish in your pond? Then keep in mind to provide a good habitat and healthy pond water. How many fish can you put in your pond? We always say, per 1,000 liters of water, 50 cm of fish length. Most fish species can be kept together in a pond.
